New South Wales in spring 2017: warm temperatures with average rainfall overall

Spring in New South Wales was warmer than average. The driest September on record made way for a wet October, and average rainfall totals in November made for an average amount of rainfall for the season.

Dry September and wet October leads to average spring totals

  • Rainfall was around average overall for spring, 14% below the long-term mean
  • The season began with the State's driest September on record, but above average totals in October from thunderstorm activity and extensive rain in the northeast brought the seasonal total up to around the spring average
  • The wettest place was Mullumbimby in the Northern Rivers District where 455.7 mm fell during spring, despite receiving no rainfall during September
  • Several stations had their wettest spring day on record due to thunderstorms in mid-October and November
  • The State's wettest day was 20 October when a cold front and trough crossed the New South Wales; totals in excess of 25 mm were recorded across much of the upper and central west regions, and around the south west slopes
  • Rainfall deficiencies continue at the six-month time scale in parts of the Lower Western District, as well as a section of the east, including the Illawarra, Central Western Slopes and Central Tablelands districts

Warm temperatures in general with a significant heat event in September

  • Spring 2017 was 1.68 °C warmer than average for New South Wales, the eighth-warmest spring on record; this is warmer than spring 2016 but cooler than 2014 and 2015
  • The State's mean maximum temperature was 2.07 °C above average; warmer than average daytime temperatures were recorded across most of the State apart from the north east
  • The mean minimum temperature for spring was 1.28 °C above average, the equal fifth-warmest on record
  • A major heat event occurred at the end of September, with two masses of extremely warm air crossing New South Wales within a week; the State had its warmest September day on record on the 23rd, and new State records for September were set at Wilcannia (40.5 °C) on the 23rd followed by Wanaaring (41.4 °C) on the 27th
  • A number of stations had their lowest spring temperatures on record as clear skies brought cold nights during September

Snow season extends to October

  • Snow depths peaked at 240 cm in late September at Spencers Creek, the deepest at any time of year since 2000, which caused an extension to the snow season

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 December 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
