Tasmania in 2017: A warm year with below average rain

Tasmania saw much less rain in 2017 than it did in 2016, with a sequence of low rainfall months near the East Coast from June to November. Temperatures were above average overall, but not as warm as 2016: a cold winter and snow during August and September were countered by warm weather in March, October and November.

Rain below average

  • Rainfall was below average in most areas, and well below average near the East Coast; the State total for the year rainfall was 15% below average
  • The year was much drier than the exceptionally wet 2016, but wetter than 2015 for the State as a whole
  • Most months were drier than average, with June and November both seeing large parts of the State well below average
  • There was a sequence of low rainfall months on the East Coast from June to November
  • Westerly winds ensured August and September were quite wet in the west, whilst May was quite wet in the east and north, rain with some thunderstorms meant December was wet in the eastern half

A warm year overall, but highly variable

A warm year for Hobart

  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was a record 18.5 °C, which is 0.2 °C warmer than the previous record from 2014 and 1.5 °C above the long-term average. The city has 133 years of temperature observations, with 122 of those in a standard Stevenson screen
  • Hobart's warmest day was 33.1 °C on 30 November, and the coolest day was on 30 May when the temperature reached only 9.0 °C
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 9.2 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average but short of the record warm 9.8 °C from 2016
  • The coldest morning was 0.6 °C on 22 June, and the warmest morning was on 16 March when the minimum temperature was 20.7 °C
  • Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 493.2 mm, which is 80% of the long-term average

Notes

The Annual climate summary, generally published on the second working day of the year, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Tuesday January 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
